Course Description
Learning disability and autism are lifelong conditions that affect how a person thinks, learns, communicates and experiences the world. This course introduces both learning disability and autism and shows how you can provide safe, person-centred care and support that respects people’s rights, meets legal requirements and helps people live the life they choose.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, you should be able to:
* Describe what is meant by a learning disability, a learning difficulty and autism, and explain the differences between them.
* Outline common causes of learning disabilities and describe how they can affect people across the life course, including as they age.
* Recognise common characteristics of autism and describe how autistic people may experience communication, social interaction, behaviour and sensory input.
* Describe how learning disability and autism can affect daily living, relationships and access to health and social care services.
* Identify practical person-centred strategies and reasonable adjustments that support autistic people and people with a learning disability, including communication and environmental adaptations.
* Outline key legislation, frameworks and responsibilities relating to learning disability and autism training, including the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training and CQC requirements.
