Suicide Prevention in Residential Care
Course Description
As people age, there are a number of risk factors that can increase their vulnerability to suicide, such as social isolation, grief and bereavement, poor physical and mental health and loss of independence. This course identifies the risk factors and warning signs for suicidal behaviour in older adults, demonstrates how to have a conversation with an older adult who you suspect is having suicidal thoughts and explores how staff can provide support to an older adult who is at risk of suicide.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, learners should be able to:
* Identify common risk factors for suicidal behaviour in older adults
* Identify protective factors that can guard an older adult against suicide risk
* Recognise warning signs of suicidal behaviour in older adults
* Demonstrate how to have a conversation with an older adult who you suspect is having suicidal thoughts
* Explain how to respond and when to refer when an older adult is having suicidal thoughts
* Identify self-care strategies staff can implement for themselves
