Altura Learning was privileged to have the winner of the Care Workers Charity annual writing competition 2019 join them in the studio at the Milton Keynes office. The winner of the ever popular writing competition was Monique Turner, who’s pen name is TM Turner, a Home Care Worker from Home Instead, Oldham and Saddleworth.
Monique had never really planned to go into care; in her own words, ‘it sort of just happened’. Having moved back home to help care for her grandma and grandad, Monique thought, ‘I’m doing this for my grandma and grandad, maybe I can do this as my career’. A career in care followed, and one she is truly passionate about.
Putting her experiences onto paper, Monique wrote a beautiful poem ‘A Blizzard Couldn’t Keep Me Away’, which she was inspired to write based on a couple of her clients she had cared for over the years. There was an actual incident on Christmas Day when she had to travel to a client and did get stuck in the snow. It was Monique’s passion for her job and her desire to get to her client and spend Christmas Day with her as no one else could, that made her continue her journey.

The Care Workers Charity continues to run the writing competition and is encouraging care workers to submit entries about their daily lives and help celebrate the passion of staff who routinely go the extra mile.
