Minimising Incontinence-Associated Dermatitis
Course Description
Continence-associated dermatitis is a frequent and preventable skin complication in older adults that can lead to pain, infection, and hospitalisation. This course explores the pathophysiology of skin breakdown related to moisture, friction, and incontinence, and highlights evidence-based interventions to maintain skin integrity. Participants will learn to perform detailed skin assessments, identify early signs of irritation, select appropriate barrier products, and develop tailored continence care plans. Strategies for education, family engagement, and multidisciplinary collaboration are also covered as well as documentation and escalation processes.
This course aims to provide staff with in-depth clinical knowledge to prevent, assess, and manage continence-associated dermatitis (CAD) in older adults. Participants will learn how to integrate skin integrity management into daily care routines.
